When you use a VPN, your internet traffic is encrypted and routed through the VPN server. However, DNS requests can sometimes bypass the VPN tunnel and go directly to your ISP's DNS servers. This exposes which websites you are visiting to your ISP, even though the actual traffic is encrypted.
